Q. Can you take too much fish oil?
|
|
A. Possibly. Fish oil provides Omega 3 fatty acids along with other fish oils so it typically amounts to about a third of the total fish oil content. Hoewever, some products have a higher content. The Omega 3 portion of the fish oils have anti-inflammatory and anticoagulation properties as well. In most instances it would take quite a few capsules to cause bleeding, so large doses should be avoided in those on anticoagulation therapy. There has been some spec ulation that those with inflammatory bowel disease could be at a greater risk for colon cancer and should avoid high doses. It is not known what dose of fish oil is too much for anyone to take. Better guidelines are needed. In the mean time start low and increase slowly. Have your fatty acid levels checked for balance to be on the safe side.
